Leading Minds 2005 - Speaker Selection Is Not Gender Balanced

Posted by on Apr 09 2005 | NAWW Announcements

The following is a letter we recently sent to the organizers of “Leading Minds 2005″. Let us know what you think at naww@onebox.com.
____________________________________________________________

Dear Ms. Rivielle,

My name is Sheri’ McConnell and I am the Founder and President of the National Association of Women Writers.

While you have an incredible list of speakers for your upcoming conference (Leading Minds 2005-www.leadingmindsny.com), there are not enough women (only 2 out of 12) scheduled to share their “innovative insights”.

This selection of “the world’s most provocative minds” does not adequately represent a balance of the genders. It is as if your event organizers are saying “men are the leading minds” in our society.

We have many dynamic women available to speak in our nation. Certainly your organizers can harness their intuitive and innovative insights to share at a future “Leading Minds” event.

Sincerely,
Sheri’ McConnell, MAOM

NAWW Member Discovers New Perspectives On Life

Posted by on Apr 01 2005 | NAWW Member News

Hi NAWW Members!

As a recent member to NAWW I am delighted to join you. For as long as I can remember I’ve wanted to publish a book. Until my sudden cancer diagnosis 5 years ago, and 2 months before my wedding, I didn’t have anything special to offer the literary world except for my perspectives on female angst, not unique and shared with millions of other women for a millenium. But cancer gave me newer perspectives on life and female angst too. I’m now writing 4 books, including a children’s book. Book 1 is publishing this May. Despite what the Park Avenue publishers said about the uninterested and over-saturated cancer book market, I persisted anyway. I listened to my public, in critical need of books that speak to them. I look forward to learning, writing and making a difference one book at a time.

Sincerely,

Michelle Miller
President,
The Cancer Monument, Incorporated
