NAWW Member of the Week: Lisa Manyon

Posted on Aug 21 2007 | Member of the Week

Q: When did you realize you wanted to be a writer?
A: Writing has always come naturally to me. For as long as I can remember I’ve been fascinated by the written word. As an only child, books were my best friends and I think that sparked my creativity. I started writing poetry and journaling at a very young age and at the risk of really dating myself, in or around the 4th grade; a girlfriend and me started the first elementary school newsletter, producing The Old-timers on a mimeograph machine.

Q: How and when did you make this dream a reality?
A: Because I have written most of my life, I guess technically the dream become reality when I was actually paid for my writing. This happened when I was reporter and advertising manager for my high school newspaper The Pepperbox. I cannot remember the exact amount I was paid PCI (per column inch) for my stories but I do know I was excited about the opportunity to earn money doing what I loved. I also earned commission from ad sales and wrote copy for the ads in the paper.

Today I am blessed to own and operate Write On ~ Creative Writing Services, LLC and I do what I love every day.

Q: What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned so far in your writing career?
A: I think it’s important to align yourself with exceptional mentors. So, the most important lesson I learned is that there is support and you shouldn’t try to build your business alone. I’ve been blessed with guidance from Lorrie Morgan-Ferrero, Peter Bowerman and Bob Bly, just to name a few. Plus, being a part of a mastermind group is an absolute must. My business has grown exponentially since networking with other like-minded entrepreneurs.

Q: What are you working on right now?
A: I recently launched my full shopping cart at www.lisamanyon.com. Since I am a professional copywriter and marketing expert, I am working on new products to generate passive income. I dabble in children’s literature and have a few drafts I need to dust off and resubmit to publishers. Plus I have some fiction projects in the works but I may publish those under a pen name.

Q: Name some authors or books that have influenced your writing life in a positive way.
A: I have so many favorites and constantly read to hone my skills. Peter Bowerman wrote The Well Fed Writer and that book was a catalyst for me. I read it while still employed at an advertising agency and the light bulb went off. I knew it was time to find my own way. So, Write On ~ Creative Writing Services, LLC was born and I couldn’t be happier.

Q: What have you recently read or what are you reading right now that you would consider an outstanding work?
A: I am committed to reading at least one book a month and I publish a book review on Amazon and to my subscribers monthly. I read Stephanie Frank’s The Accidental Millionaire for the first time this week and was astounded by her story and the fact that many of the principles in her book mirror my POWER Planning Process. This is a must read.
