Maslow’s Mojo

Hi Creators!

Maslow’s Mojo–I wanted to make sure I shared yet another resource on Maslow with you this week. I talked about Maslow in a previous post on Entrepreneurs and Boredom. This resource explores Maslow’s Hierachy of Needs in relation to how you serve your customers (or members). It is a new book by Chip Conley titled Peak: How Great Companies Get Their Mojo From Maslow. By the way, Inc. Magazine has a really great article on him and the book this month that I think you would also benefit from reading.

Until next time–think big and then act!

PS

A few of my companies have some great discount deadlines ending this week:

Just thought you might want to know. ;) Take care!

How to Create Passionate Connections

Do you feel validated? I heard Oprah once say that she thinks everyone on this earth has one basic need—to be validated. I know when I started the National Assn of Women Writers it was because I needed to find other women who loved to write and create like me. I needed to learn with them and laugh with them because I yearned for the validation that I would receive as I in turn validated the writers too. Little did I realize at the time how many women all over the world needed their goals and dreams affirmed just as I did.

I too believe that validation or passionate connections as I like to call them are so important that I have built multiple companies with that vision in mind. Here are a five ways I have learned to create passionate connections and validate others over the last seven years as I grew the NAWW and my other companies (www.sherimcconnell.com). Even if you don’t want to start a business—whatever your goals are—I know you will accomplish them by reaching out to validate others and following the tips below. Enjoy the journey! Read more

The Effects of Complaining

September 22, 2007 by Sheri McConnell

Hi Creators!

I found a couple blog posts this week that really helped remind me why I need to stop complaining. I have to tell you that since the kids started school a couple weeks ago, I have been a little bit grouchy–too many demands each day from the teachers can send me into a real complaining frenzy. I LOVE teachers, but with three kiddos in school and another in daycare, I just find all of the daily to-do’s overwhelming.

Anyway I read a couple posts this week that reminded me what I should be focusing on in my life–the people I love and cherish. I need to let all the other stuff just melt away. First I saw this post over at Lessons From A Scrapbook. Tasra is right. All of our true purpose in life IS wrapped up in the little things. And the next time I complain–I need to refocus my energy into a more positive experience. Life is a process of continuous growth.

And then Timothy Ferriss just posted this about a 21-Day No-Complaint Experiment. I had to wonder if the universe was trying to tell me something? All of us something… I know everyone in our house could benefit from doing this experiment. Of course Timothy doesn’t have children yet does he! Oops, there I go–I mean ‘thank you Timothy’. :)

To your success,

Entrepreneurs and Boredom

September 17, 2007 by Sheri McConnell

Hi Creators!

I read this quote below over at Tim Ferriss’s Blog:

3) Boredom is failure. In a first-world economy where we have the physical necessities covered with even low-class income, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs drives us to need more for any measure of comparative “success.” Lack of intellectual stimulation, not superlative material wealth, is what drives us to depression and emotional bankruptcy. Generalizing and experimenting prevents this, while over-specialization guarantees it.

I loved Tim’s point because he totally pinpoints why true entrepreneurs always have that itch under their skin to “create” something more–something new all the time. I remember having a conversation with a co-worker back in 1999 when I worked as a Systems Analyst at Verizon Wireless and I had a copy of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs posted on the cubicle wall in my office and he blurted out–”that is why I am not happy–my need for self-actualization isn’t being met at this job!” Many people feel that way because most JOBS aren’t there to meet our needs are they.

I know I love being an entrepreneur because I am in charge of meeting my own needs. I make sure I focus on those self-actualization needs–creativity, spontaneity, problem solving and so on. I teach this at the AWE (http://www.aweconnect.com) to entrepreneurs often when I tell them “I believe everyone needs to create or a part of them will die”. I know it is dramatic but I know it is true.

One of my favorite authors, Sarah Ban Breathnach, also approaches the consequences of boredom from another angle in her book, Something More. She recommends you dig deep and excavate your authentic self to meet your unmet needs.

I agree, boredom is failure and sometimes it leads to the death of dreams and even souls.
